What I’d do differently if I moved abroad again

Moving abroad teaches you a lot, not just about a new country, but about yourself too. Looking back, there are definitely a few things I would handle differently if I had the chance to do it all over again.

1. Give myself more time to find an apartment
This is probably the biggest one. I only had about two weeks before my job started, and it created so much unnecessary stress. I felt rushed into decisions I normally wouldn’t make. If I moved again, I’d give myself way more time to settle and search properly.

2. Have a bigger budget for the beginning
I’d plan for more financial comfort upfront. Moving abroad already comes with enough uncertainty, having a bit more budget makes everything easier and less stressful. It gives you breathing room while you figure things out.

3. Only trust housing I’ve seen in real life
This is a big lesson. There are a lot of scams out there, and it’s easy to get caught up when you’re under pressure. I once rented an apartment without seeing it in person because I was running out of time, and I wouldn’t do that again. Seeing a place live (or through a trusted source) saves you from a lot of unwanted surprises.

4. Learn the language better beforehand
I had a basic understanding, but honestly, it wasn’t enough. Even a slightly better level would have made paperwork, conversations, and daily life so much smoother. It’s one of those things you don’t fully appreciate until you’re there dealing with it.

5. Ask for help sooner with bureaucracy
I tried to do too much on my own at first. But moving abroad is already a big adjustment, you don’t have to struggle through everything alone. Accepting help earlier would have saved me a lot of stress and time.

At the end of the day, moving abroad is messy, exciting, and overwhelming all at once. You figure things out as you go. But if I had known these things earlier, I definitely would’ve made the process a lot smoother for myself.
