How to find an apartment in Spain

Finding an apartment in Spain can feel like a full-time job at first… but once you understand the system, it gets a lot easier.

The first thing to know: the market moves FAST, especially in big cities like Madrid, Barcelona, or Valencia. If you find a good place, you need to message right away and be ready to visit ASAP. Waiting even a day can mean it’s gone.

Most people search on platforms like Idealista, Fotocasa, or Habitaclia. Set up alerts, check multiple times a day, and if you can, message in Spanish, it really increases your chances of getting a response.

Before you even start messaging, have your documents ready. Many landlords will ask for:
• Work contract
• Recent payslips
• NIE (foreigner ID)
• Proof of savings (sometimes)

Being able to send everything immediately can make a huge difference.

In terms of costs, expect:
• 1 month rent
• 1–2 months deposit
• Possible agency fee (less common now for long-term rentals, but still happens)

Also, be careful with scams. If a listing looks too good to be true, it probably is. Never send money before seeing the apartment in person (or at least through a verified video tour).

Each city has its own vibe and price range, so do a bit of research on neighborhoods before committing. What works in Seville might feel completely different in Bilbao or Madrid.

Tip: Don’t rush the process. Book temporary housing for 1–2 months so you can look for an apartment in Spain without stress. It’ll save you from making a decision you regret later.

And finally: patience. It might take a bit of time to find the right place, but once you do, it’s 100% worth it.

Spain is an incredible place to live, the apartment hunt is just the first step.

Good luck! 🙂
