Favorite things to do in Rome

Rome is my second favorite city of Europe, I’ve been here now a couple of times. After a few visits, I’ve built up a list of favorite spots and experiences that I always return to. If you’re planning a trip (or even just dreaming of one), I’d love to share some of the things that make Rome so special to me.

The Doria Pamphilj Gallery

This underrated gem is right in the heart of Rome but never feels crowded. The Doria Pamphilj Gallery is housed in a still privately owned palace, and walking through its gilded halls feels like stepping into a living, breathing museum. The collection is stunning, with works by Caravaggio, Velázquez, and Titian, but it’s the atmosphere that makes it unforgettable.

Walking around in Villa Borghese

Rome is busy and buzzing, but Villa Borghese is where I go to breathe. This beautiful park is a green escape filled with fountains, shady trees, art museums, and sweeping views over the city. You picnic in the grass, read on one of the benches, or simply wander and get lost, it’s the perfect balance to the energy of the city streets.

Wandering in Trastevere

One of my favorite neighborhoods of Rome. Think cobbled lanes, ivy-covered buildings, cozy restaurants and a laid-back vibe that makes it perfect for wandering without a plan. I love spending late afternoons here, watching the light change and stopping for gelato (or wine) whenever the mood strikes.

Bookstore hunting

Rome has so many charming, independent bookstores — and I can never resist checking out a few. Whether it’s searching for Italian books, English books or the cozy atmosphere, bookstore hopping has become a favorite part of my routine. Many stores even have vintage editions and books in multiple languages, which makes browsing even more fun.

Here are my favorites:

  • Spazio Sette Libreria
  • Otherwise Bookstore
  • Ibs+Libraccio
  • Borri books
  • Open door bookshop

The classics

Yes, they’re famous. Yes, they’re crowded. And yes, I still love them. The Fontana di Trevi is simply magical at night, especially when it’s quiet enough to hear the water. The Spanish Steps are perfect for people-watching (and catching your breath after a climb), and the Colosseum never fails to make my jaw drop. There’s something deeply humbling about standing in front of something so ancient and enduring.

Getting lost in Monti

Monti might be my favorite neighborhood in Rome. It feels like a village within the city, full of artisans, vintage boutiques, wine bars, and beautiful street corners. I always try to stay nearby or carve out a few hours just to wander around. The streets themselves are part of the charm.

Favorite streets in Rome

There’s an art to walking in Rome. Some of the most beautiful streets in the city feel unreal, especially in the early morning or golden hour. A few of my favorites:

  • Via Panisperna
  • Via del Boschetto
  • Via Baccina
  • Via dei Neofiti

Each one has its own personality, ined with tiny shops, flowering balconies, or hidden cafes. There’s always something to discover.

Check out this blog post for more details about these streets.

Vatican city

Even if you’ve been before, Vatican City never stops being awe-inspiring. Whether it’s the sheer scale of St. Peter’s Basilica, the artistry of the Sistine Chapel, or just the serene quiet of the Vatican Gardens, there’s a sacred and timeless energy here that always leaves me feeling inspired.

Wandering at night

I love Rome at night, the cozy vibes it gives, the beautiful lights. I would definitely recommend wandering around Rome at night at least one time while you are there, trust me it is worth it!
